There are so many different
communication tools that make one an excellent communicator or an individual that is lacking in communication skills. The three that are
the most important to me are: Listen effectively to others, gain audience or
listener attention and interest, and lastly support and comfort others.
As I grow older, I find myself lacking at in the skill of being able to listen effectively. I am often finding
myself stopping and realizing what I have done after I have already interrupted
someone while they are talking. The others skills, gaining an audience or
listener attention along with comforting others are something that I have
learned in over the years by working with others. I have come to believe
that if one doesn't have compassion to support and comfort others, working in the
health care industry is going to be rather difficult. People want to feel that
you care and have compassion or they will have a hard time listening to you.
Unfortunately, a few years ago I had to show the most compassion and support
one can ever have to show. Telling my uncle that his eight year old child had
passed away was one of the most awful things I’ve ever had to do in my
life. I believe that the life experience that I have gained from that situation
along with the belief that I was called to do that show that I have strong
skills in supporting and comforting for others.
The skills that I choose in my
opinion are extremely important in the medical field. If one doesn’t have these
three skills I believe that they will come off as being rude and disrespectful
to patients. Proper communication in nursing is also crucial as the patient depends on for their care.
"Strong communication skills are vital to any profession, but in nursing, they can mean the difference between life and death."

This semester I would like to
improve on my listening skills. I need to learn how to effectively listen to
others so that I am not interrupting them. I don’t like it when others interrupt
me, so it is something that really bothers me. I hope to obtain this
communication skill quite quickly as I don’t want others sharing their feelings
or opinions to think that they don’t matter to me.
